Arizona ignition interlock basics
In Arizona, drivers convicted of an alcohol-related DUI are generally required to install a state-approved ignition interlock device (IID) — a small breath-testing unit wired into the ignition that keeps the vehicle from starting if alcohol is detected, with periodic rolling retests while you drive.
According to Intoxalock, since January 1, 2023 eligible Arizona drivers can request a Special Ignition Interlock Restricted Driver License (SIIRDL), which allows driving with an interlock installed and can let you start earning credit toward your interlock requirement right away. Restricted licenses may also require things like SR-22 insurance and completion of screening or treatment programs.

Ignition interlock questions, answered
How long does an Intoxalock installation take?
Intoxalock says most ignition interlock installations take about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the vehicle. Plan a little extra time: after the install we walk you through how to use the device — the breath test, rolling retests and what the screen prompts mean — before you drive away.
What should I bring to my installation appointment?
Bring the vehicle that will be equipped, a valid photo ID, your Intoxalock account information if you already have it, and payment for the installation fee. If you are not the registered owner, Intoxalock notes the owner must consent to the installation. Intoxalock will confirm anything else your case requires.
How often do I need a calibration visit?
Calibration and data-download visits happen on the schedule set for your program. Your device and Intoxalock will remind you when one is due. Book each calibration with us online or by phone — we are open Monday through Saturday, 10 AM to 6 PM, including Saturdays for your convenience.
What happens if I miss a calibration?
Missing a scheduled calibration can lead to a device lockout or a compliance issue with your program. If you are going to miss one, call Intoxalock right away at (480) 581-2981 and book the next available calibration slot with us as soon as possible.
Can you install an Intoxalock in a car I do not own?
In most cases yes, as long as the vehicle owner consents to the installation, according to Intoxalock. The device goes in the vehicle you regularly drive. Bring the owner’s consent and we will handle the rest.
Can Sound Image remove my ignition interlock device?
Yes. Once you have completed your requirement and received approval to remove the device, book a removal appointment with us. We remove the interlock and reconnect your vehicle’s original wiring so everything works as it did before.
