Arizona ignition interlock basics
In Arizona, drivers convicted of an alcohol-related DUI are generally required to install a state-approved ignition interlock device (IID) — a small breath-testing unit wired into the ignition that keeps the vehicle from starting if alcohol is detected, with periodic rolling retests while you drive.
According to Intoxalock, since January 1, 2023 eligible Arizona drivers can request a Special Ignition Interlock Restricted Driver License (SIIRDL), which allows driving with an interlock installed and can let you start earning credit toward your interlock requirement right away. Restricted licenses may also require things like SR-22 insurance and completion of screening or treatment programs.
Arizona interlock deadlines at a glance
- 30 days to install. The device must be installed and reported to MVD within 30 days of your conviction date (Arizona MVD FAQ).
- Calibration every 77–90 days at an authorized service center (Ariz. Admin. Code R17-5-706).
- 72-hour early recall. Tampering, a device malfunction or four valid violations within 90 days trigger a recall — return within 72 hours or the device locks out (R17-5-603).
- Every vehicle you drive needs an interlock, including vehicles you drive for work (Arizona MVD).

As Intoxalock recommends, report the service ahead of time in the Intoxalock app or MyAccount so any power interruption during the work is on record, and bring a spare mouthpiece in case the technician has to provide a breath sample to move your vehicle.

How long does an Intoxalock installation take?
Intoxalock says most ignition interlock installations take about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the vehicle. Plan a little extra time: after the install we walk you through how to use the device — the breath test, rolling retests and what the screen prompts mean — before you drive away.
What should I bring to my installation appointment?
Bring the vehicle that will be equipped, a valid photo ID, your Intoxalock account information if you already have it, and payment for the installation fee. If you are not the registered owner, Intoxalock notes the owner must consent to the installation. Intoxalock will confirm anything else your case requires.
How soon do I have to install an interlock after a DUI in Arizona?
According to the Arizona MVD, you have 30 days from your conviction date to have the device installed and reported to MVD by the manufacturer. Missing that deadline can lead to an immediate suspension of your driving privilege, so book your installation as soon as your Intoxalock account is set up.
How often do I need a calibration visit?
Arizona rules require a calibration check at an authorized service center every 77 to 90 days after installation, and proof goes to MVD at least every 90 days. Your device and Intoxalock remind you when one is due. Book each calibration with us online or by phone — Monday through Saturday, 10 AM to 6 PM.
What happens if I miss a calibration?
Missing a scheduled calibration can lead to a lockout or a compliance problem with your program. Arizona rules also call for an early recall when the device records tampering, a malfunction or four valid violations within 90 days: you then have 72 hours to get to the service center for a reset, or the device locks out. If you are going to miss a visit, call Intoxalock right away at (480) 581-2981 and book the next available slot with us.
Can I still get stereo, remote start or other work done with an interlock installed?
Yes. Tell us about the interlock when you book. Intoxalock asks you to report any service work ahead of time in the Intoxalock app or MyAccount so a power interruption during the work is on record, and to bring a spare mouthpiece because the technician may need to give a breath sample to move the vehicle. Because we install both car audio and Intoxalock devices, we plan the job around your interlock.
Can you install an Intoxalock in a car I do not own?
In most cases yes, as long as the vehicle owner consents to the installation, according to Intoxalock. The device goes in the vehicle you regularly drive. Bring the owner’s consent and we will handle the rest.
